The Ancient Papacy

Welcome!

Ancientpapacy.org is a new web site devoted to Catholic apologetics. Our goal is to defend what the ancient Creed calls the one, holy, Catholic and apostolic Church but with a specific focus.

Our principal area of interest is the ancient papacy, which we would describe very broadly as the papacy in the first eight centuries of ecclesiastical history—roughly the period of the first seven ecumenical councils. We hold that the popes always claimed and exercised their unique authority in the Universal Church, an authority known as the apostolic primacy, the principality, or simply the primacy.

The purpose of this site is to elucidate papal history, answer questions, and engage in disputations with those who challenge our convictions. There will be a question board for questions and answers, and a discussion board for general comments and disputations. Anybody may come on the site and comment, but we ask that our respondents try to observe this distinction: please leave pure questions in the question box, and comments or disputations in the discussion board. Obviously questions that arise during the course of a disputation may be raised in the discussion board.

What’s unique about this site is that the host is a trained linguist who prefers to use primary sources translated directly from the original languages whenever possible. We prefer if possible to deal with questions about the ancient papacy, meaning that of the first eight centuries, because the host believes that in practice, the first eight centuries tend to be the focus of most apologetical discussions about papal issues.
